We install all three regularly, and we've replaced roofs of all three after Florida storms. Here's the honest comparison — what's actually different, what's marketing, and which one fits which Tampa Bay homeowner.
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. Their Timberline HDZ architectural shingle is the most widely-installed shingle in Tampa Bay — you're probably looking at one on your neighbor's roof right now. The HDZ ('High Definition Zone') is GAF's flagship line, replacing the older Timberline HD.

Best for: Tampa Bay homeowners who want the most widely-supported shingle in Florida, the highest wind warranty potential, and a contractor with GAF Master Elite certification (us included).
Owens Corning is GAF's biggest competitor. Their Duration shingle line is built around SureNail Technology — a fabric-reinforced nailing strip that gives the nails 600% greater pull-through strength than standard shingles. In Florida hurricane testing, this is a meaningful real-world advantage.
Strengths: SureNail Technology is the genuinely strongest nailing surface in residential shingles. Granule adhesion (TruBond) is excellent — you'll see less granule loss in gutters after storms compared to lesser shingles. Limited lifetime warranty is competitive. Wide color selection.
Weaknesses: Algae protection (StreakGuard) is 10-year warranty — shorter than GAF's StainGuard Plus. Platinum Preferred contractor program is more selective, meaning fewer certified installers in Tampa Bay (you have fewer warranty-eligible contractor options).
Best for: Tampa Bay homeowners who specifically want the SureNail wind performance and don't mind a shorter algae warranty. Also a great pick if your roof has a complex shape with multiple penetrations — the SureNail strip gives more forgiving installation tolerances.
CertainTeed Landmark is the most premium-positioned of the three in terms of build quality. The shingle is heavier per square (about 230 lbs vs GAF/OC at 215-225), uses a NailTrak nailing strip with a clear nail line for precise installation, and has the best dimensional appearance for homes going for an upscale architectural look.
Strengths: Heaviest, thickest standard architectural shingle in this comparison. Best aesthetic appearance — dimensional shadow lines look more like wood shake than the others. NailTrak makes installation more accurate. SELECT ShingleMaster program is the most rigorous contractor certification.
Weaknesses: Standard wind warranty is 110 mph (lower than GAF/OC out of the box) — you need to upgrade to ClimateFlex or Landmark Pro for the 130 mph rating, which adds cost. Less commonly stocked in some Tampa Bay supply yards. SELECT ShingleMaster contractors are rarer here.

All three brands are excellent products. The honest truth: shingle brand matters less than installation quality. A poorly-installed Owens Corning roof will fail faster than a properly-installed GAF roof. The brand decision is real, but it's not the most important decision.
When comparing quotes, look at what specific brand AND specific product line each contractor is quoting. 'GAF Timberline' could mean Timberline HD (lower spec) or Timberline HDZ (current premium).
