Ask any experienced roofer where leaks really come from, and you'll hear the same thing: not the wide-open field of shingles, but the edges, valleys, and transitions. The small metal details — drip edge and flashing — are what protect those vulnerable spots. Drip edge is a metal strip installed along the edges of your roof — the eaves and rakes. Its job is to direct water off the roof and into the gutter, instead of letting it wick back underneath the shingles and rot the fascia and decking. It also gives the shingles a clean, supported edge and helps keep wind-driven rain out.
Flashing is metal (usually aluminum or galvanized steel) installed wherever the roof meets something else or changes direction — the spots water naturally wants to sneak through. Done right, flashing channels water over the seam; done wrong or left out, those exact spots become leaks.
