Tampa Bay's live oaks dropped leaves all winter. If your gutters are still packed, you're heading into storm season with a ticking time bomb. Here's your complete spring gutter cleaning guide.

Here's something most Tampa Bay homeowners don't realize: live oaks don't drop their leaves in fall like northern trees. They shed in late February and March — right when you think winter cleanup is over. That means your gutters are packed with fresh debris just weeks before Florida's rainy season kicks in. If you skip spring gutter cleaning, you're essentially sending your home into the wettest months of the year with a clogged drainage system.
We clean and install gutters across Tampa Bay year-round, and March through May is when we see the most preventable damage. Here's everything you need to know about spring gutter maintenance in our area.
Tampa receives an average of 46 inches of rain per year, with roughly 60% of that falling between June and September. When a summer thunderstorm dumps 2-3 inches in an hour, your gutters need to move an enormous volume of water away from your foundation. Gutters packed with oak leaves, pine needles, and Spanish moss can't do that. The water overflows, pools around your foundation, and starts a chain reaction of damage that can cost thousands to repair.
A single clogged downspout can cause over 1,000 gallons of water to overflow during a heavy Tampa Bay thunderstorm. That water goes straight to your foundation, landscaping, and siding.
Use a sturdy extension ladder on level ground. Never lean a ladder against the gutters themselves — they can't support your weight. Wear gloves (Tampa gutters often harbor spiders and fire ants) and safety glasses. If your home is two stories or higher, strongly consider hiring a professional. Falls from ladders are one of the leading causes of home injury in Florida.
Working from the downspout outward, scoop out leaves, twigs, and accumulated muck with a gutter scoop or garden trowel. In Tampa Bay, you'll commonly find decomposed live oak leaves that have turned into a dense, wet sludge — this material is heavier than it looks and puts serious strain on gutter hangers. Bag the debris rather than throwing it on the ground where it can clog landscape drains.
After removing solid debris, use a garden hose to flush the entire gutter system from the end opposite the downspout. This clears fine sediment and reveals any slow-draining areas. Watch how the water flows — it should move steadily toward the downspout without pooling. Standing water indicates a sag or improper slope that needs correction.
Run water through each downspout and confirm it exits at the bottom with strong flow. If water backs up or trickles, you have a clog. A plumber's snake or pressure washer can clear most blockages. Make sure downspout extensions direct water at least 4-6 feet away from your foundation — Florida's sandy soil makes homes particularly vulnerable to foundation shifting from water pooling.
Since you're already at gutter level, take a few minutes to check for these common problems:
For most Tampa Bay homes, we recommend cleaning gutters at least three times per year: once in late March (after live oak leaf drop), once in late June (before peak hurricane season), and once in November (after fall storms). Homes with heavy tree cover — especially those surrounded by live oaks, pine trees, or palms — may need cleaning every 2-3 months.
Tired of climbing ladders every few months? Gutter guards can reduce cleaning frequency by 80-90%. We install leaf guard systems that keep out Tampa Bay's worst offenders — oak leaves, pine needles, and Spanish moss.
Sometimes cleaning reveals that your gutters are beyond maintenance. If you find widespread rust, multiple leaking seams, sections that are permanently bent or sagging, or fascia rot behind the gutters, replacement is more cost-effective than continued repairs. Modern seamless aluminum gutters eliminate the leak-prone seams found in older sectional systems and typically last 20+ years in Florida's climate.
